NEW EVERY MORNING (MERCIES)

It’s simply incredible the fact that—of all the things that mankind runs out of—and must of necessity exert effort to ensure steady inflow in other not to come short of them, it is the things that are so freely given (like mercy), that require no effort at all to take possession of. So you wake up each morning and there’s brand new mercy staring you in the face. All you have to do is receive it. Just like Manna of the Israelites, there is a portion for each day, and you don’t have to amass more mercy than you need for 24 hours. Not that you can anyway…because it’s nothing close to Manna. Even Manna, when kept overnight, got infested with maggots.

Usually, it was folks who wouldn’t heed the instruction to not keep Manna overnight that exposed the angelic meal to maggot infestation. Such is not a fate that God can bear to watch mercy being subjected to. It is too priceless…yet so readily affordable by all and sundry. Whether you wake up on the right or wrong side of your bed, there’s always brand new mercy served you for breakfast by God Himself. So, if you think about it, there’s not a single person in this world who’s not been served breakfast in bed…on daily basis—unfailingly.

Even when such divine treats go unacknowledged, it doesn’t stop God from treating mankind to new dimensions of mercies untold—day in, day out. And here’s a thing about mercy, it covers for virtually all aspects of life. If one spends hours praying for nothing but mercy alone, rest assured he has prayed for everything. Therefore, when God ushers us into each new day with mercy, He’s given us everything we need for that day. It is then safe to say that the song is justifiably rendered which says: “the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

There’s everything to gain in reaching out for this mercy. First off, there’s eternal life to gain in receiving God’s mercy and being saved from the law of sin and death—which is by default at work in every man. David says in Psalm 51:5: “in sin did my mother conceive me.” And in verse 7 he says: “purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” Not to forget that the chapter starts out with this plea: “have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness. According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.” This is the purpose that mercy first and foremost accomplishes.

Then there’s the progression to the daily dose of mercy which eases the faith work. If it so happens that you come to a faceoff with hard knocks as you journey through life—such that leaves you unsettled in any fashion and you have no idea what your next line of action ought to be, simply calling out for mercy will see the lines falling to you in pleasant places. Mercy supersedes ignorance/inadequacies here and there…and fosters a fulfilling of the will/purpose of God for a person’s life and destiny…the very essence of mankind’s existence.

Considering that such divine gift is served daily on account of God’s love for sinful mankind, it beholds on humanity to advantageously savor it with gratitude by consciously reaching out for it—to first of all become saved by grace through faith, then for everything else that pertains to life and godliness. Otherwise, one would only be a passive beneficiary thereof—eligible for the caution in Ephesians 5:14-15: “…awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light. See then that you walk circumspectly, not as unwise but as wise” [paraphrased]. You’ll agree that—that is the voice of mercy calling out to those that have ears.

In the middle of 2020 when I considered myself to have been at the peak of my best days, I had made a post that reads: “even in our best days, we should always pray for mercy. We never can tell what tomorrow may bring. But God is merciful. It is of His mercies that we are not consumed after all. That is why we should always pray for that mercy.” Fast forward to the start of 2021 when my worst days got ushered in, my “lifelong” outcry became never-ending pleas for mercy, which, most certainly is the reason for my still being onboard this ship of life…and not just life, but life in abundance, unlike in my previously tagged best days.

Having in view the more than obvious nearing of the second coming of Jesus, there is no better time to plunge into this mercy and be on the safe side than now. Anything can happen anytime. Who knows? Also, it will take mercy as well to remain and take root on the safe side until the end of the world. Now, thanks be to God who always causes us to triumph in Christ. Thanks be to Christ who loved the church and gave Himself for her. And thanks be to the Holy Spirit who helps us in our weaknesses and makes intercession for us. May the peace of God which surpasses all understanding—keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
