MY MUSIC HUSTLE

Long before I started putting words together to form novels, articles, poems, and movie scripts, I was putting them together to form music lyrics, such that were to die for!!! Back then, I never knew I was gonna be a writer. As far as I was concerned, I was gonna be the next big music artiste in the industry. I even had several dreams of myself performing to a mammoth crowd, and I was convinced I would make it in music. ROTFL!!!

In 2010, I came together with three other young artistes who were more into the music game I was, and we did two campaign songs for the then-aspiring Senator of Eket Senatorial District, Mrs. HELEN ESUENE, the CEO of VILLA MARINA HOTEL, the best hotel in the OIL CITY, EKET, AKWA IBOM STATE.

We recorded the two songs in two nights. Our obsession with music made such tasks a walkover. While award-winning and multitalented producer Shebonky was busy cooking the beatz, punchline rapper Barry Brizzy was freestyling nonstop to it, as he intermittently jotted down a few lines on paper for reference purpose when recording.

Swaggalicous Tuzzy was passively muttering his lyrics which he didn’t deem fit to put down on paper, not even for reference purpose. But having always had the spirit of a writer (without knowing), I penned down a full 16-line melodious verse with a beautiful rhyme pattern that teased the ears. Soon enough, it was time to record, and we hit the booth in turns, including producer Shebonky who’s also a singer.

However, pushing the song to the aspiring Senator was mission impossible. As you may know, folks of that caliber are like gods in this world. The closest we got to reaching her was during one of her campaigns when we stormed into the arena and met the performance coordinator in the person of VICTOR ABRAHAM who promised to let us perform since we were the only artistes presenting a campaign song. The rest were there to form 2Pac, B.I.G, and Sky-B. Lol.

We waited under that hot sun for hours all dressed up like superstars. We actually enjoyed the attention and preferential treatments that were given to us. The girls just couldn’t keep from staring and wishing to mingle. All the while, our minds were on the hundreds of thousands we heard would be given to us after our performance, and we couldn’t help imagining what we would do with the money and the girls.

The aspiring Senator finally showed up by past 5:00pm and all the political norms were observed. Soon enough, it was time for performances. By this time, the hand of the clock had already fallen on some minutes past 6:00pm and it was getting dark. We thought we would be the first to perform. We couldn’t wait. But there’s this music group called UNIK BROTHERS who pretty much owned the day back then. So we were moved to second place.

Being Star Artistes, they spent an eternity performing several songs until it got so dark and the aspiring Senator had to leave. By the way, kidnapping was still in vogue then. We were beyond frustrated. All we had left were the girls who came throwing themselves on us, thinking we were stars to reckon with. They were not wrong anyway, and we didn’t disappoint them.

All efforts to push the songs to the aspiring senator afterward proved futile. All we could do was to add them to our music gallery. It’s been 8 years now, and such songs were believed to have been lost, not until I scattered my room today and found them alongside a couple of other songs I did in 2010; shortly before I switched designation and took up the Jesusboy crown.

Anyway, I thought you might want to join me on a trip back in time to the days when boys started aiming for the sky, when we chose the path of entertainment and got so close to making a fortune out of it, and when our lives started revolving around shows, stages, and the microphone.
